A Tennessee vet accused of improperly euthanizing dogs and cats has been fined $7,000 and barred from practice. The Tennessee Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners placed Dr. William Baber's license on a five-year minimum trial period starting April 24 and fined him $2,500 and his wife Linda $1,200. In addition, the Board's submission of the suspension contains a harsh assessment of the conduct of Dr. Babers, who accuses him of unprofessional, unethical and incompetent conduct and practices veterinary medicine in a manner that is unfavorable to the profession.
In addition to the charge of unlawful euthanasia, the November suspension order states that Dr. Baber left animals unattended in his office for more than two hours and failed to ensure that the animals were dead before incineration. He said that vets who practice privately may not have noticed the rule changes in the shelter's work because they might later get a contract with the shelter. Changes in the law, which are noted in state circulars for vets, can go unnoticed and be forgotten by doctors who work long hours and are not directly affected, Dr. Thompson said.
